Cardinals Wear Unauthentic Negro League Throwbacks

Apologies for the negativity that follows. I know a majority of reviews will say how good the Rickwood Field game looked, but this is not one of those reviews.

From a historical standpoint, these throwbacks were an awesomely awful look. I have posted about this before, but I’ll say it again, these throwback uniforms are FAR from authentic simply because they bear little to no resemblance to any photographs we currently have of the NNL St. Louis Stars.

The cap logo is a modern contrivance. The jersey is, until proven authentic with historical photography, a modern contrivance. The socks are a modern contrivance.

But wait. How can we make these uniforms make even less sense? The Cardinals as the home team wore gray uniforms. Excuse me? Really? Well… this is not totally unprecedented, as the rise of 1980s powder blue throwbacks in the past 15 years have caused a few teams, including the Cardinals, to wear their road color at home for a game or two. But this game was nationally broadcasted, it is a one-off game that is supposed to honor and celebrate the Negro Leagues. One great way to honor and celebrate the Negro League is to wear something that looks good on TV. Hm. What should we wear?
I HAVE AN IDEA. LET’S USE THE SAME UNAUTHENTIC UNIFORM WE’VE BEEN WEARING FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS.
This is a pretty big game, shouldn’t we change it up a bit? Shouldn’t we wear white at home?
NAH LET’S JUST CHANGE THE SOCKS. NO ONE WILL NOTICE. THESE UNIFORMS LOOK CLOSE ENOUGH.

BArf.

And finally. Nothing screams authenticity like an advertisement patch on the sleeve.  Because we all know the St Louis Stars of the 1920s were sponsored by Stifel and the San Francisco Seals were sponsored by Chevrolet.

It’s just plain lazy. It’s boring. It’s incredibly sad and frustrating to think about.

Seriously. Let’s pool all of the resources of Major League Baseball, Nike, Fanatics, the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Francisco Giants, and I’m sure a few other organizations who helped put on this great event, and see what our budget is. We’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars to play with and they just throw on the same fake throwbacks they’ve been wearing for literally over 20 years. OUCH.

Is there a silver lining to all of this? Yes, both teams wore the old pre-2024 uniform templates, the good ones, the ones that aren’t the new 2024 crappy Nike template. Cool, switch back to that template full time, please.

When they’re ready to put on some authentic throwback uniforms, they know where to find me.

  1. I agree with your comments! What a contradiction for MLB to go to Rickwood, in an effort to honor the great Willie Mays, the Negro Leagues, and put a spot light on a part of baseball history that deserves further recognition.

    A. What took them so long? B. Why is the authenticity of the uniforms not more accurately displayed?

What were the REAL objectives of this game?

Answer: Guilt for not honoring the negro leagues for decades, and more importantly, merchandising and profit.
