If you don’t read Uni-Watch, why not? Check out Paul’s latest post here: Cards Scrapping Red Spring Training Jersey for 2024
Pre-2014, the Cardinals wore their regular season white and gray uniforms in Spring Training, a tradition that I really enjoyed. Then in 2014 they began wearing red jerseys for all Spring Training games, a trend that I don’t really enjoy. There were a couple seasons, at least 2018 comes to mind, where they added additional little graphics within the numbers of the jersey and wore a Grapefruit League patch on the jerseys. I’m not a fan.

Paul’s Uni-Watch post this morning says because Nike is implementing their 4+1 rule, that there is not a possibility of a red spring training jersey. Home White, Road Gray, Home Cream, Road Blue, that’s the 4, and the +1 being the City Connect uniform, which is yet to be unveiled.
The red jerseys would make a sixth jersey, against Nike’s rules. So it looks like the red jerseys are gone! Sounds good to me. I love seeing the Cardinals wearing their standard uniforms during Spring Training. Paul also writes that he asked team president Bill Dewitt III about this theory, see quotes.
Paul Lukas: I ran that info by team owner Bill DeWitt III, who replied, “That is correct information.”
So there you have it. Straight from BD3 himself.
Next big announcement will be the City Connects, which we still have no news about as of Jan 24, 2024. No unveiling date, no leaks, no information. Let’s hope they don’t suck!

The Four + One Rule (can’t we just say five?) obviously applies to the regular season, too, so I am guessing this means that the recent trend of players wearing sweatshirts and/or “Performance Tee’s” during BP will now become much more common, if not standard. I can’t imagine them taking BP and doing pre-game on-field workouts in full game uniform, but I also couldn’t have imagined BP jerseys going away, so what do I know?
As for the BP/ST jerseys themselves, I am actually going to miss them. I’m not devastated, but I thought the current iteration was quite sharp, and I didn’t mind seeing them during Spring Training games. In much the same way that the navy caps used to serve as a distinguisher between Home and Road games, the BP jerseys being worn in Spring Training did a nice job of reminding viewers that these were games that did not count.
I will never complain about getting to see the home whites, but I always felt that seeing the full regular season uniforms on display down in Jupiter was a little out of place – kind of like someone wearing their Sunday Best to a backyard BBQ for a 6 year old’s birthday party.
As someone that loathes the red cap and gray jersey uniform combination, I remember how much I hated having to look at that combo for road games during Spring Training from 2000/2001ish – 2012. I was always very glad when the regular season got underway and they started wearing the navy caps on the road again. (Don’t even get me started about how terribly the club handled that whole road cap/fan vote situation …) In recent years, the red BP jerseys on the road have provided a nice Spring Training respite from the eyesore I have to deal with during 90% of their road games.
