2024 Spring Training Caps

The new 2024 Spring Training caps have been revealed and are on sale at the MLB shop website. Take a look.

Let’s take a look at some details before we get to any opinions. The new pattern of the hat is this checkered looking texture. The cap is nearly identical to the Sunday caps, with the exception of being all red instead of having a blue crown. On the side is a Grapefruit League 2024 patch. And the biggest feature, the embroidered bird.

Overall, this is a decent cap. I like that the cap is all red because I think it will look great with both our home whites and road grays during Spring games. I like that they decided to use an official Cardinal logo, unlike the Spring Training cap last year that featured Angry Bird.

However, I don’t like the rendering of the bird. This rendering of the logo is definitely a regression in terms of detail from the regular season Sunday Caps. See comparison below.

You’ll notice the Sunday cap on the left is much cleaner and has much better defined lines throughout the entire logo. Notably in the bird’s head… The head feathers, the detail of the eye, the detail of the facemask and the beak line. The long and main wing swoop is stitched as a much thicker line than other wing lines. The wing pattern begins to seem chunky and compressed together. Even the knob of the bat has lost its detailed line. Take a look at another zoomed shot below.

Good idea, not great execution. I’m hoping that these are just the ‘for sale fan versions’ and that the official on-field versions will have more detail and better execution.
