Whitey Herzog Memorial Patch

WOW. I’m a little appalled, but here we are. Cardinals Hall of Famer, National Baseball Hall of Famer, World Series champion, master of the small ball, master of Whitey Ball, The White Rat, CARDINALS LEGEND, Whitey Herzog passed away 1 month ago on April 16. And last night the Cardinals began wearing a Whitey Herzog memorial patch.

It was expected that Whitey would get a memorial sleeve patch similar to other Cardinals legends. Musial in 2013, Schoendienst in 2018, Lou in 2020, Gibby in 2021, and Sutter in 2023, all of whom had memorial sleeve patches worn.

The designs of the sleeve patches are identical, it is a red circle, and inside the circle is the player’s number, with their autograph emblazoned over the numbers. Each patch had either a white interior, gray, cream, or blue to match the jersey it was worn on. And the most important aspect, was each patch so far has been stitched/embroidered, until the Herzog patch.

The Cardinals posted an up close photo of the patch on their Instagram… and the Whitey patch is clearly a printed, ironed-on, cheapy plastic/nylon patch. The man takes us to glory, wins the 1982 World Series, gives us to two more National League Pennants, and we honor the man with an iron on patch. OUCH.

Not only in this photo are we staring at The Birds On The PATCH, but we get this flat patch that probably was printed on my HP Inkjet a few minutes before the game, and ironed on in a children’s arts and crafts summer camp class. oof.
