Cardinals Wear Independence Day Garb

Today is the Fourth of July, and the Cardinals wore Independence Day uniform elements as they have since 2008. The caps this year have an off-white slight cream color crown and a red brim, featuring an STL outlined in blue with an American flag inlayed inside the STL emblem. On the side of the cap is the National League logo.

The socks are navy blue with three stripes outlined in yellow-gold, and a large white portion starting near the ankle going about midway up the calf that seems like they are trying to emulate stirrups. Why not just wear actual stirrups? Inside the white portion is a stenciled USA in yellow-gold color.
