We have made two changes to the 1887 page in our database.
The first change is to the light blue World Series uniform. We previously did not show this uniform with St. Louis lettering on the chest, and we did not have any newspaper article that explicitly says the uniform had lettering. Today we found the following in the Cleveland Leader…
The Cleveland Leader: October 14, 1887
The Browns new uniforms are rather striking and dressy-looking. They are bright blue with caps to match, brown stockings, and “St. Louis” in black braid across the breast.
The St. Louis lettering we show is simply copied from the dark blue uniform, but there is a chance that the lettering was more similar to the striped uniform, or could have even had another type of lettering all together. We also show St. Louis in brown letters, instead of black as stated in the newspaper. We have no certainty what this lettering actually looked like.
The second change is to the maroon uniforms, and this is simply based on a hunch. We see the words ‘wine colored’ pop up in newspapers to describe the Browns, and we have a number of baseball cards from the era showing red or maroon colored shirts. But using a pure maroon color doesn’t make a lot of sense to us. Instead we think the shirts were more brown than maroon, or at least a reddish brown. We do not have a newspaper article to corroborate this claim.
