Perforated Numbers

As I was looking closely at some photography of the Cardinals new City Connect jerseys, I noticed the front numbers have little perforated dots in them. This wasn’t a huge surprise to me, because Uni-Watch earlier this year published a story about how some teams have the perforated dots, and some don’t.

Obviously after seeing the City Connect has it, I assumed our other jerseys also had the perforated dots, and I went searching for more photos of the other four jerseys to confirm they also had the perforations. What I found is odd and inconsistent. See pictures below, click to enlarge.

So… The trend here, at least regarding the Cardinals jerseys, is that the alternate jerseys have the perforated numbers, while the standard home and road jerseys do not have the perforations.

So… Why? Does this have something to do with the construction of the uniforms? There is a slight variance between the sleeves of the alternate jerseys and the home/road jerseys, but why would that affect the numbers on the jersey? With the exception of the City Connect jersey, there is no difference of the design of the numbers on the front of the jersey. It’s a red fill with blue outline. I’m grasping at straws, do alternate jerseys have different material? Does it have to do with the color of the fabric?

I don’t know the answer.
