St. Louis Stars Jersey discovery

Thanks to a reader who saw our article earlier this week about Negro League throwback concepts, he sent me an email with a photo I had not seen. The photograph shows Candy Jim Taylor wearing a jersey with a big SL on the chest. Take a look below, click to enlarge.

I couldn’t find the RMY Auctions link, so I did some research on Candy Jim Taylor to figure when this photograph may have been taken.

Taylor was manager of the St. Louis Stars and apart of the team from 1923-1925, and then again from 1927-1929.

We’re assuming this is a home uniform because we also believe this photo was taken in St. Louis at Stars Park. But we have no certainty that this is a home uniform.

Because we have no other photos of this uniform, and it doesn’t match any other photos we currently have, we are making a big assumption that this uniform was worn in a year that we currently do not have cataloged. That would narrow our search down to 1924 or 1927.

And while it could be both 1924 or 1927, those are just guesses. If we look at the uniform and say it might be a road uniform, that throws 1925 and 1928 back in the mix, and again I’m just going off of the existing research I have and assuming this is something that doesn’t fit into any of the years we have already.

Regardless, great photograph, interesting uniform. I’ve done my best to mock up what I can see, take a look below… And as usual, if you have any information, photographs, and/or newspaper accounts of the Negro League uniforms, please feel free to reach out and send us what you have.
