Following the 1927 season, Cardinals star first basemen, Jim Bottomley, went on a barnstorming tour. Barnstorming was popular in 20s and 30s for fans in rural towns to get a chance to see major league baseball players. Bottomley wanted to wear a Cardinals jersey for this tour, and received a jersey that was reminiscent of the 1928 to come.
Similar to the 1928 jersey, Bottomley’s jersey features a single Bird on a Bat embroidered onto a pinstriped shirt. The biggest difference between Bottomley’s jersey and the actual 1928 jersey is the red piping on the placket and sleeves of Bottomley’s jersey. After Sunny Jim wore this jersey on his barnstorming tour, it luckily survived and made its way into the Cardinals Museum collection. The jersey is of very high quality for being from 27/28, and the embroidery of the Bird remains in excellent condition. We also luckily found photographs of Jim Bottomley wearing the jersey.

B/w photo of Jim Bottomley standing with two other men – most likely Andy Bednar and Red Ruffing, who are in Nokomis, IL to play in an exhibition game. This was one of two photos that served as proof that Bottomley wore this jersey. Red Ruffing was also a native son of Nokomis IL–Bottomley’s home town.
