Recently I received some comments on the website and emails from SABR member, baseball historian, St. Louis Negro League specialist, and author, Matt Garvey. Matt recently wrote and published a book about the St. Louis Stars titled Cool, Mule, and the Devil: The Story of the St. Louis Giants and Stars. Matt is also currently working with Clem Hamilton and other SABR historians to publish another book about the 1928 St. Louis Stars team, which should be out sometime in 2027.
I found out while talking to Matt on the phone that he was just a genuinely great guy and a great historian. He says “I got into this only because there was a gap in the historiography…The research and writing has been rewarding, no doubt, but by far the best thing to come from that decision was getting the opportunity to meet new people and make new friendships. This is by far one of the most rewarding endeavors I’ve ever had.”
It’s been a crazy and rewarding few weeks talking to Matt on the phone. He has tons of great insights, photos, and dates that we didn’t have. He knows so much and it’s honestly so much fun talking to him about St. Louis baseball. So after sharing dozens of emails and hours on the phone with him, we were able to completely revamp our Negro League section of the website.
What changed? We added a few new uniforms we did not know about, we redesignated some photos and uniforms that were in the wrong year, and we added some new photographs we have never seen before, all thanks to Matt!
Go check it out at the link below. And as always regarding the Negro Leagues, the uniforms and logos you’ll see in the pages on our Negro League section are best approximations based on a scarce number of photographs. Years, colors, logos, and uniform styles have been approximated. We welcome any additional photography and newspaper accounts that will help bring the authentic St. Louis Negro League baseball uniforms back to life.
