On August 28, 1999, the Cardinals wore a red jersey. This was the first time in the team’s history that they have worn a red shirt in an official regular season game.

The jerseys featured an MDA patch and were part of a Shirts Off Their Backs promotion. Initially this was supposed to be for Labor Day, but the Cardinals were out of town on Labor Day, so the promotion was held the weekend before their road trip.

    1. we have photos of the jersey after they were worn, notably in Bill Henderson’s game worn guide. But I can’t seem to find any game shots either. I thought I remembered one photo of McGwire playing the field with the red jersey, can’t seem to find it.

  1. I’m an Oriole fan from Maryland, always been interested in uniforms. I knew the Yankees and Tigers Dodgers and Cardinals never wore a colored third jersey. I definitely remember the Dodgers did a couple times in 1999. And I thought for sure I remember watching the Cardinals in red on a Saturday game of the week on Fox. So glad they have this clip, now my memory is confirmed!
